31.08.2010Joikusoft publishes WiFi tethering growth
2010 has been excellent for WiFi Tethering.
More people have taken WiFi Tethering in use and those that have, use it more. iPad from Apple is the one biggest explanation for increased use of tethered mobile data. Market for tethered WiFi keeps multiplying as wifi hungry devices like iPad emerge, mobile data tariffs go down, and people get sick and tired for carrying an additional box like mifi with them for internet access.
In P8/2010, the user base of JoikuSpot topped 900.000 active users. This is 3x growth from last year, and we still have 4 moths to go this year! The consumption of jspot mobile data increased to an average of 24Mb/JoikuSpot internet session. Average jspot user uses tethered wifi 9 times a month.
Biggest growth comes from markets of China and US. An average data ARPU of US user is more than 4x of a global "norm". China beats all the stats in terms of user adoption. Good seconds are the coutries of Brazil, Russia, Germany, Italy, UK and Spain. Most active fans for tethered wifi come from Brazil.
Most of the use happen via N97, N900, N95, E7x and E5x devices. N900 (Maemo) use has grown sizeably after its incarnation, and we expect high adoption in upcoming Meego domain.
3g Operators also see the light of wifi tethering. Sprint and ATT in US have announced WiFi tethering in their networks and we expect tmob to follow the suit. Meanwhile, industry drivers such as 3 outside of US continue to offer tethered WiFi for their subscribers for no additional fee.
The growth, overall, in the domain of wifi tethering, is exponential. More users come into the play, and those who come, play more. We anticipate WiFi tethering to be a standard feature in mobile phones 3 years from now. Gartner has similar views as us, with their recommendation for smartphone providers to add wifi tethering inside their shipping platforms.
